How to work it out by hand
To go back, subtract the hours from the current time. To go forward, add them. If you pass midnight, the date changes with it (here is which day 12 AM belongs to).
Example: it's 2:00 PM on a Thursday and you want the time 18 hours ago.
- Write the time in 24-hour form: 2:00 PM is 14:00.
- Subtract the hours: 14 − 18 = −4.
- If the result is below 0, add 24 and move back one day: −4 + 24 = 20:00, so the answer is 8:00 PM on Wednesday.
Going forward works the same way in reverse: add the hours, and if the result passes 24, take away 24 and move forward one day.
- 2:00 PM + 8 hours: 14 + 8 = 22:00, which is 10:00 PM the same day.
- 2:00 PM + 12 hours: 14 + 12 = 26, and 26 − 24 = 2:00, which is 2:00 AM the next day.

Hours ago and from now: common questions
What time was it 8 hours ago?
Take the current time and go back 8 hours. If that passes midnight, the date moves back a day too. This page works it out from your device clock and shows the answer at the top, with every hour from 1 to 24 in the table below.
What time will it be in 12 hours?
The same clock time with AM and PM swapped. 9:15 AM becomes 9:15 PM, and 9:15 PM becomes 9:15 AM the next day. Pick From now and enter 12, or find the 12 hours from now row in the table.
Does this use my time zone?
Yes. Right now means the clock and time zone on the device you're using, and the page shows which time zone it read. To work from another time, switch to A set date and time.
What about daylight saving time?
The calculator counts real elapsed hours. If a daylight saving change falls inside the span, the clock reading shifts by an hour. Where clocks change at 2:00 AM, 8 hours before 9:00 AM on the spring change day reads 12:00 AM instead of 1:00 AM, and 8 hours before 8:00 AM on the fall change day reads 1:00 AM instead of 12:00 AM. The answer still shows what your clock read at that moment.
How do I count minutes ago?
Use the Minutes box. Enter 0 hours and 45 minutes to see the time 45 minutes ago, or combine both, such as 2 hours 30 minutes from now.

The hours ago calculator on TimerCalculator.com was built by Cedrick Reese. It reads the time from your own device and subtracts or adds real elapsed hours, so it shows your local time rather than a server's or UTC time. The table and the answer box use the same function. Before this version was published, automated browser tests ran it on a simulated clock set to a Thursday at 2:00 PM, where 18 hours ago came out as Wednesday at 8:00 PM in both the answer and the table, and on the two US daylight saving change mornings in New York time, where the note under the answer appeared.
