How to work out how long until a time

  1. Write the time now and the target time in 24-hour form. 2:45 PM is 14:45 and 5:00 PM is 17:00.
  2. Subtract now from the target: 17:00 − 14:45 = 2:15, so it's 2 hours 15 minutes.
  3. For minutes, multiply the hours by 60 and add the minutes: 2 × 60 + 15 = 135 minutes. For seconds, multiply that by 60: 8,100 seconds.

If the answer comes out negative, the target has already passed today, so add 24 hours. At 10:20 PM, the time until 7:00 AM is 07:00 − 22:20 = −15:20, and −15:20 + 24:00 = 8:40. That's 8 hours 40 minutes, or 520 minutes, until 7:00 AM tomorrow.

Borrowing works the same as with any time math: if the target's minutes are smaller, take one hour and turn it into 60 minutes. The guide to adding and subtracting time has more examples, and you can convert a 24-hour time first if 24-hour times are new to you. To turn the total minutes into hours and minutes or a decimal, use the minutes to hours converter.

Your questionUse
"How long until 5 PM?"This page. You give it a clock time and it counts from right now, live.
"What time will it be in 3 hours?"You know the hours and want the clock time, so use the hours ago and from now calculator.
"How long is it from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM?"Neither time is now, so use the calculator for time between two clock times.
"Tell me when 20 minutes are up."The online timer, or press Start a timer for this above to hand it the time left.
"Wake me at 6:30 AM."The online alarm clock, which rings at a clock time instead of after a countdown.

Countdown questions

How many hours until 5 PM?

Subtract the time now from 5:00 PM. In 24-hour time 5:00 PM is 17:00, so at 1:30 PM it's 17:00 − 13:30 = 3 hours 30 minutes. The countdown at the top of this page does that from your own clock and keeps it current to the second.

How do I work out how many minutes until a time?

Find the hours and minutes left, then multiply the hours by 60 and add the minutes. 2 hours 15 minutes is 2 × 60 + 15 = 135 minutes. The calculator shows this as Total minutes, with total seconds next to it.

What if the time has already passed today?

Then the next one is tomorrow, and the page counts to that and marks it Tomorrow. At 6:00 PM, the time until 9:00 AM is 15 hours. Right at the target time, the page shows that it's that time now for one minute before it moves on to tomorrow.

Does this use my time zone?

Yes. It reads the clock and time zone on the device you're using, and shows the zone it used under the answer. If your device clock is wrong, the countdown will be off by the same amount. To count to a time in another zone, convert that time to your own zone first.

Does daylight saving time change the answer?

The countdown is real elapsed time. On the night clocks change, that can be an hour more or less than the gap between the two clock readings. In the US, NIST explains that clocks jump from 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM on the second Sunday of March and go from 2:00 AM back to 1:00 AM on the first Sunday of November. So at 11:00 PM the night before the spring change, 7:00 AM is 7 hours away, not 8. The page adds a note when a change falls inside your countdown.

Can I get an alarm when the time comes?

Yes. Press Start a timer for this. It opens the online timer with the time left already filled in, so press Start there right away and it will sound an alarm when it reaches zero. To ring at a set clock time instead, like 6:30 AM, use the alarm clock that rings at a clock time.

Can I count down to a date?

Not on this page. It's built for clock times today or tomorrow. For the hours and minutes between two dates and times, use the date mode of the time duration calculator.

This countdown was written by Cedrick Reese for TimerCalculator.com. It builds the target from your own date and time zone, then subtracts the current moment in real milliseconds, which is why a daylight saving change shows up as an hour more or less instead of being hidden. The answer box and the common times table call the same function. Before this version went up, automated browser tests froze a simulated clock at set moments and read the countdown: 2:44:30 PM to 5:00 PM gave 2:15:30, 10:20 PM to 7:00 AM tomorrow gave 8:40:00, and 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM across the US spring change gave 7 hours.
